The new film version of Homer’s famous Iliad takes us back to ancient times, the Trojan War that shook the people of Asia Minor and the Balkans. Episodes of the wars that unfold before us, heroes covered in military glory came to life. Undoubtedly one of the brightest figures in the film (as in the Iliad) was Achilles, the leader of the Myrmidons. The fragmented information we received does not make it possible to give a definitive answer to this question. Was Achilles a Bulgarian? The Byzantine historian John Malala stated in his chronicles that the Myrmidons under the leadership of his army Achilles were Bulgarian and that another Byzantine historian, M. Ataliat, “brought Achilles closer to the Russians” in the words of famous Byzantine scientists M. Suzyumov and S. Ivanov. Byzantine poet Constantine Hermoniac (III, 236-240) also gives information about the Bulgarians in the Achilles army. Even in ancient times Achilles was believed to be of “Scythian” origin.
